SUMMARY:The Vail Series presents The Westerlies
DESCRIPTION:The Westerlies\, “an arty quartet…mixing ideas from jazz\, 
 new classical\, and Appalachian folk” (The New York Times)\, hold a sing
 ular space in modern music. From Carnegie Hall to Coachella\, the GRAMMY-n
 ominated ensemble has upended presumptions of the brass tradition to creat
 e music that is “folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually ri
 gorous” (NPR Music). \n\nComprising of Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowland
 s on trumpet and Andy Clausen and Addison Maye-Saxon on trombone\, the ens
 emble has relentlessly composed\, arranged\, adapted\, recorded\, and tour
 ed over the past fifteen years with the precision of a string quartet\, th
 e audacity of a rock band\, and the charm of a family sing-along. \n\nAcro
 ss ten critically acclaimed studio albums\, The Westerlies have earned “
 a unique reputation for exploring the emotional textures of American music
 ” (DownBeat)\, championing living composers and collaborators including 
 Caroline Shaw\, Nico Muhly\, Conrad Tao\, Wayne Horvitz\, Robin Holcomb\, 
 and Theo Bleckmann.\n\nDENISON COMMUNITY TICKETS \n\nTickets are free for 
 Denison students\, faculty\, and staff. \n\nPUBLIC TICKETS \n\nWe share th
 ese experiences with our larger community by making a limited number of ti
 ckets available for public sale on a first come\, first served basis at $2
 0 each. \n\n___ \n\nThe Vail Series was endowed in 1979 by a generous gift
  from the late Mary and Foster McGaw in honor of Jeanne Vail\, class of 19
 46. Just as it was intended to do\, the Series enriches the artistic exper
 ience of the entire Denison community. Programmed creatively with the mind
 ful pursuit of learning across traditional academic boundaries\, more than
  100 individual Vail Series artists have found their way to Denison’s cl
 assrooms and stages\, but that doesn’t include the dozens of ensembles o
 r full symphony orchestras that have played here over the years.
