The Heisey Wind Ensemble brings their 40th Anniversary Season to a close on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by the HWE Big Band. The concert will be held at the John W. Alford Performing Arts Hall in the John Gilbert Reese Center on the campus of The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College.
The HWE Big Band is a smaller group from within the Heisey Wind Ensemble. The HWE Big Band presented their first concert in 2011, and the upcoming concert will be the ensembles twenty-ninth concert for the Licking County community. The group plays music from the Great American Song Book, classics from the past and current arrangements written for the modern jazz ensemble.
For the May 17th HWEBB concert we welcome guest director Dr. Michael Smith. Dr. Smith is the Head of Jazz Studies at The Ohio State University. He directs the OSU Jazz Ensemble, and has taught at every level from kindergarten through university. Dr. Smith has played drums with a who’s who of jazz greats.
Dr. Smith has arranged for vocalist Anabella Petronsi to join the HWEBB. Dr. Petronsi, a native of Bahía Blanca, Argentina, is a versatile mezzo-soprano and passionate educator. She earned her Voice Performance degree from the National University of the Arts in Buenos Aires, and later completed both a Master’s in Music Education and a Doctorate in Musical Arts at The Ohio State University. She has been featured with numerous Central Ohio musical ensembles.
